5-star Royalton Riviera Cancun hit by ‘food poisoning’ allegations
The 840-room, 5-star Royalton Riviera Cancun has been the subject of customer reviews citing uncomfortable sickness symptoms and food poisoning in recent weeks.
A popular long-haul destination in Puerto Morelos, the Royalton Riviera is situated between Cancun and Playa del Carmen on Mexico‘s east coast. It is ranked as a ‘5T’ hotel by TUI, who say “Thanks to a number of swim-up rooms, eight restaurants and a beachfront location, the Royalton Riviera Cancun serves up wow-factor holidays with ease.”
Unfortunately, according to some Spring and Summer visitors, holidays spent at the hotel have been memorable for the wrong reasons.
Guest was “unable to eat for rest of trip”
TripAdvisor member dizzyrose claims she is still sick after returning from her June trip to the resort:
“I came home a month ago and I’m still ill from whatever I caught in this place. I was sick the whole time with food poisoning style symptoms and the hotel did not offer any help.”
A recent submission to iwaspoisoned.com alleges that food from one of the a lá carte restaurants on-site led to an onset of distressing symptoms:
“I ate at the Caribbean restaurant on property. We just returned on Friday night. I have been sick with chills, diarrhea, body aches, bloating, nausea and stomach cramps since Wednesday evening. I was the only one that ate the chowder. I was sick within an hour. I was not able to eat the rest of the trip. I have tried to eat since we have been home, but anything, even water causes severe stomach cramps”
Couple were ‘violently ill’
User Paul Y, says that illness struck after eating sushi from the buffet restaurant on the first night of their family stay:
“…we wrongly assumed that it was sanitary. That evening, my wife and I became violently ill. Our 3 children did not. Luckily my wife is an Emergency MD and brought appropriate drugs (CIPRO) but it took 3 days to recover, and we didn’t really feel like eating afterwards.
When brought this event up to management and asked for a room with a separate bathroom (so our kids wouldn’t get sick by the shared toilet and woken up by our vomiting) the only option they gave us was to up sell us to a larger room for $300. ”
Has sickness affected your stay at Royalton Riviera Cancun?
Historically, where gastric illnesses have been established as being contracted at package holiday hotels, the causes include:
- Safe food temperatures not being maintained
- Cross-contamination of food from utensils and surfaces (for example, tongs used for both raw and cooked meats)
- Inadequate food storage procedures
- Inadequate cleaning procedures
- Failure to institute appropriate practices to prevent and/or control and outbreak of a food-borne pathogen
