Briton says son hospitalised with Salmonella after Luxury Bahia Principe Akumal stay
A family posting on TripAdvisor have claimed that their youngest son was diagnosed with Salmonella after becoming unwell during their stay at the Luxury Bahia Principe Akumal in Mexico.
Visiting in August this year, Allison F from Plymouth says that their youngest son fell ill while at the resort:
“The smell of sewage when they water the grounds is awful…2 days after returning to the UK (he) was admitted to hospital with salmonella gastroenteritis and kept in isolation for 12 days. Hospital said he must have caught it while in Mexico and as we were all-inclusive it had to be from here.”
Salmonella is an infectious bacteria which affects the intestinal tract, and can be spread by eating raw or undercooked meat, poultry or eggs. Complications can occur if the infection spreads beyond the intestinal tract.
The Luxury Bahia Principe Akumal in Riviera Maya is a 4-star-plus beach resort which is host to over 750 rooms, with all-inclusive guests served by 7 different restaurant options. A significant number of global visitors posting TripAdvisor reviews in the last few months have raised concerns about food temperatures and illness they say could only have originated in the hotel:
“Sadly our vacation did not go well because both my husband and I got bad stomach infection. On Tuesday night we felt sick, whole day Wednesday we were in the room with vomiting and diarrhea and were taking to the Hospital by ambulance on Thursday September 20th. We had to stay at the Hospital till Friday noon and got bill for $6000.00 US plus $2900 for my husband and $2750 for me for the ambulance service. As we stayed in hotel and did not have food outside of Hotel for that period of time, we believe that we got food poison in Hotel and beside loosing our vacation time we had to pay high bill to the hospital.” AS1922, Chicago
What to do if you’ve been affected
People who purchase all-inclusive package holidays are protected by regulations which mean that they can be compensated if they fall ill as a result of eating the food provided as part of the package.
Holiday Claims Bureau have handled claims for British package visitors to Mexico and all over the world. If your much-anticipated break was afflicted by illness, we’re here to listen and help.
We are striving to make all-inclusive holiday consumers aware of the steps they should take if sickness strikes. This includes:
- Seeking medical advice
- Reporting your illness to the Tour Operator
- Collating any helpful evidence (eg photographs, receipts for medicines, details of staff you spoke to)
- Exchanging contact details with anyone else you meet who has had members of their party fall ill
- Taking care if the hotel or tour operator offer you any kind of ‘good will gesture’ such as vouchers, upgrades or token sums of money – they may try to get you to sign documents that discharge them of any further liability.
- Seeking legal advice from a holiday illness claim specialist.
