Jungle Aqua Park – families tell of ‘Salmonella’ and ‘severe sickness’ woes at Hurghada hotel
Reviews of the Jungle Aqua Park Hotel in Hurghada, Egypt have been posted on TripAdvisor claiming that families visiting the resort in October were stricken with nasty gastric illnesses, with one child allegedly being diagnosed with Salmonella.
Popular for it’s huge on-site water park, the all-inclusive hotel has an official 4-star rating, and reviews on public forums are historically very positive. However, TripAdvisor member KKRPM writes in a review that after spending two weeks at the hotel, all 8 of the family party fell ill with ‘severe sickness and diarrhoea’:
“After spending about £70 at pharmacy and feeling ill most of the holiday with stomach cramps we managed through. However my 7 year old boy is still ill and has been now for 3 weeks. His poo has been tested and it has come back with salmonella poisoning. So if the management see this post I would be great full if the could get in touch as health service want to know where the outbreak is.”
Fellow October guest Boab2207 expands on the situation in his own review and claims that other families were similarly affected:
“2nd day in we all started becoming unwell it spread throughout our family (8 of us). Took it as deli belly as its normally the cause to be honest. But then we started noticing other families becoming unwell my daughter really unwell (5 years old) severe sickness and diarrhoea… got talking to other families as you do and they were all unwell and i mean they were all unwell… 8-year-old welsh boy rushed to hospital severe sickness and diarrhoea. When we returned to Scotland my nephew was still unwell and after giving doctor a sample of poo he has salmonella. Best to say we didn’t have the best experience.”
What is Salmonella?
Salmonella infects the intestine and is often spread via eating contaminated meat, poultry, eggs, or foods which have been undercooked. The symptoms are unpleasant, though they usually settle fairly quickly. However, complications can occur if the bacteria spread beyond the intestine; infants, the elderly and those with health conditions are particularly vulnerable.
Hotels should take steps to ensure that food is stored and prepared safely and its temperature properly maintained so that diners are not put at risk of infection with Salmonella. Systems should be in place that safeguard against cross contamination, for example having specific utensils for specific raw and cooked foods and ensuring that surfaces are thoroughly disinfected after they have been used to prepare meat.
