Hotel RIU Touareg salmonella case settled for £5,000

Mark Hudson, from Crawley, West Sussex, travelled to the Hotel RIU Touareg in Boa Vista, Cape Verde, looking forward to spending quality time and a well-earned break with his wife, Amanda and friends.

However, just 3-days into their stay, Mr Hudson began to suffer with symptoms of gastric illness that left him confined to his hotel room, bed bound with his symptoms.

“It was awful” Mr Hudson says. “I had stomach cramps, felt nauseous, had cold sweats, sickness, diarrhoea and felt fatigued.

“With us having gone all-inclusive, we only ate in resort and swam in the hotel’s swimming pool before I was struck down with what I suspected was food poisoning”

“I reported the illness to the hotel” Mr Hudson added “They advised me to seek treatment from the doctor onsite at the hotel, but the medical treatment was too expensive

“I also reported the illness to the tour operator, Bobby, who travelled a few miles to the nearest pharmacy to get me some Buscopan to help alleviate the symptoms”

Symptoms continue upon return to UK

But the symptoms persisted and upon his return home, Mark visited the Princess of Wales hospital and was advised he had an infection in his bowels. He was prescribed antibiotics, anti-sickness tablets and later referred to his GP where stool samples were taken and tested positive for Salmonella.

Salmonella, most frequently contracted through contaminated food or water, is a bacterial disease that affects the intestinal tract and if left untreated can lead to severe symptoms that in some cases require hospital treatment.

Michael Walker of Holiday Claims Bureau, who handled Mr Hudson’s case, comments:

“We were surprised that liability was initially denied by the Defendant.  The medical evidence was supportive of Mr Hudson’s case, and in our opinion, so were the disclosure documents provided by the hotel.

“We issued legal proceedings.  A trial window had been set in September when the Defendant made a low offer to settle Mr Hudson’s claim.

“We put considered the symptoms and ordeal Mr Hudson had suffered and were able to negotiate a sum of £5,000 in compensation.

“We are satisfied with the outcome and wish Mr Hudson all the very best for the future”
