British Holidaymakers Report Illness After Stay at TUI Blue Manar, Tunisia
Several British holidaymakers have reported falling ill after staying at the TUI Blue Manar hotel in Hammamet, Tunisia, prompting concerns about the resort’s hygiene standards.
The holidaymakers, who had chosen the popular four-star resort for their summer holidays, experienced severe gastric symptoms including diarrhoea, vomiting, and stomach cramps, either during their stay or shortly after returning home.
The affected travellers are raising alarms over the conditions at the hotel, with several reportedly requiring medical treatment due to their symptoms while on holiday. For some, they are continuing to suffer from ongoing health issues weeks after their return to the UK, sparking worries about the long-term impact of the illness.
Guests turn to TripAdvisor to alert future guests of their symptoms
Guest reviews on TripAdvisor echo these concerns. One reviewer, who stayed at the hotel in July 2024, stated, “Food was constantly recycled and not served hot… many of us in the group fell ill.” Another traveller who visited in June shared a similar experience: “Both my partner and I fell ill with severe stomach cramps and sickness, which ruined our holiday.”
Despite the appealing amenities and beachfront location that make the TUI Blue Manar a popular choice, these reports have overshadowed the resort’s reputation. Multiple reviews mention issues with food safety and cleanliness, which are suspected to be contributing factors to the illnesses.
“We were told it was due to the heat, but there was more to it!”
A guest who visited in July remarked, “The hygiene standards in the buffet restaurant were poor, with food often left out for long periods.” Another review highlighted the inadequate response from the hotel staff: “When we reported the sickness, we were told it was due to the heat, but clearly, there was more to it.”
Expert opinion
“We are aware that there is an increasing number of people affected by gastric illness, particularly those who travelled to the TUI Blue Manar in recent months.
Our experienced team of holiday illness solicitors actively represent and have settled claims for British holidaymakers who have suffered symptoms of gastric illness caused by various pathogens contracted as a result of poor food and hygiene failings in package holiday resorts. These pathogens include campylobacter, cryptosporidium, and salmonella.
It is unacceptable for any hotelier not to investigate the cause of such outbreaks. If holidaymakers have been told their illness has been caused by the heat, I would urge them to seek medical attention for a pathogen test.
I would suggest to anyone who has fallen ill during their stay at the TUI Blue Manar, or any other package holiday resort, to get in touch if they feel their illness has been the result of poor food and hygiene failings caused by the hotel.” said Mr Walker, Partner, and acting solicitor at Holiday Claims Bureau.
