Family Falls Ill at Esra Hotel in Turkey, Tests Positive for Campylobacter
A family of three, visiting the Esra Hotel, also known as the Hotel Esra Family Suites in Turkey, fell ill during their stay in August this Summer. Suffering from severe stomach pains, diarrhoea, and sickness, the family reported their illness to the hotel and Jet2. Subsequently, a stool sample submitted shortly after their return to the UK confirmed the presence of Campylobacter.
The family claims that they had not consumed food or drink outside of the hotel before falling ill and expressed concerns about undercooked buffet food and reports of faeces in the pool. This incident has sparked concerns regarding the health and safety standards at the Esra Hotel with many guests turning to TripAdvisor to warn others after their stay.
One guest commented: “The restaurant was full of flies landing on all the food, especially the salads and desserts that weren’t covered. The dining room doors are open all night so cats or anything can go in through the night. The snack bar had food sat out all day under heat lamps in the sun, including the bread buns so they were rock hard. On the very few occasions we tried any food we ended up with a bad stomach and we spoke to some others who found this too so we had to eat out for every meal. I would never go to this hotel again especially when I know Altinkum has a lot of hotels that are far better than this one”
