Cryptosporidium outbreak at Eftalia Village sparks legal action

A cryptosporidium outbreak at the Eftalia Village resort in Antalya has left numerous holidaymakers severely ill, with many now pursuing legal action. The outbreak, which is alleged to have begun in July, through to August and continued into September, has been linked to the resort’s swimming pools, where several guests believe they contracted the waterborne parasite.

What is Cryptosporidium?

Cryptosporidium is resistant to chlorine, making it difficult to eliminate in public swimming pools. The illness causes symptoms such as severe diarrhoea, vomiting, and dehydration, which can last for up to two weeks.

Affected tourists, including families with young children, have been sharing their distressing experiences. One anonymous family reported having to seek medical attention upon their return to the UK due to their symptoms persisting: “We thought we were going on a relaxing holiday, but it turned into a nightmare,”

Another family, who also requested anonymity, shared a similar story: “I was very sick, with constant diarrhoea and stomach cramps. I could barely leave our hotel room. The holiday was completely ruined. A lot of money wasted”

These stories mirror the experiences of many other guests who stayed at the resort during this period.

Response from Holiday Claims Bureau

Holiday Claims Bureau is now representing multiple tourists in legal action against the resort. Mr. Walker, leading the case, emphasised the seriousness of the outbreak. “This has been an incredibly traumatic experience for many of the families involved,” he said. “We are pursuing claims for compensation to cover not only their medical expenses but also the significant disruption to their holidays and the emotional toll it has taken. Many of these families trusted the resort to provide a safe and enjoyable environment, only to face severe illness that derailed their plans.”

Mr. Walker added, “We advise anyone affected to document their symptoms, medical treatments, and any communication they have had with the resort. It’s crucial for us to gather as much information as possible to hold the responsible parties accountable.” Mr Walker noted that claims are being filed for a range of damages, from medical costs to lost time during the holidays.

Guest reviews on TripAdvisor

Guest reviews on platforms such as TripAdvisor have echoed these concerns. One traveller wrote, “We stayed at Eftalia in late August. My son got sick after using the pool, and soon the entire family was unwell. It wasn’t until we got home that we realised it might be cryptosporidium.” Such reviews highlight the widespread impact of the outbreak
