Excellence Punta Cana update – couples speak out on sickness nightmare as 8th tourist dies
We are monitoring developments in the Dominican Republic as a guest at the Excellence Punta Cana became the eighth tourist to die in mysterious circumstances on the island over recent months.
The FBI are now investigating the deaths of the American tourists as Leyla Cox, 53, was found dead in her hotel on 10 June, just a day after her birthday. The body has yet to be returned to her family as toxicology testing continues.
Worrying accounts from hotel continue
In April, we reported on a honeymoon couple becoming very ill with Salmonella during their stay at the Excellence Punta Cana. Similar alarming accounts have continued over the last few weeks.
TripAdvisor user Ambere2019 says she and her husband were stricken three days into their 5-day honeymoon getaway in May:
“We were sick in bed for the remainder of our honeymoon with fever, body aches, chills, and awful stomach symptoms. Most of our honeymoon was spent in the room in bed sick, racing for the bathroom.
Upon doing more research of the resort, it seems to be a common issue. I am disgusted and angry that we contracted food poisoning from this place. This is our second time in the Dominican. I would NOT recommend this place to anyone. We were suspicious of the food throughout our stay, some of which seemed undercooked and inedible.”
“Very scary” experience of couple
June visitor Kels says that she became concerned about maintenance of the buffet when she saw flies around the food, and that her husband became ill during their stay. As he struggled with a fever and a temperature of 39C, the couple were asked to sign a waiver before hospital treatment would be arranged. When he was eventually taken to hospital, Kels says the treatment and communication was “extremely poor”:
“The ER would not allow my husband or I to view his labs and did not release the labs upon the discharge. The ER recommended hospitalization for 24 hours as treatment for the infection they said my husband had.
I ended up becoming ill during our return. We are both on the mend now, but the whole experience was very scary.”
And in the last few days, Jane from Colorado posted a review of another blighted couple’s visit in May, claiming that she became “horribly ill” during her penultimate night at the hotel.
“I have never been that sick before ever. Running to the bathroom every few minutes and unbearable stomach pains, headaches, dizziness.” – Jane Y, Colorado
