Food Poisoning Outbreak Leaves Guests Fleeing Melia Dunas Beach Resort

A suspected food poisoning outbreak has wreaked havoc at the Melia Dunas Beach Resort and Spa in Cape Verde, with dozens of British holidaymakers struck down by severe illness. Guests have reported symptoms including excruciating stomach cramps, uncontrollable vomiting, and diarrhoea, with some requiring urgent medical attention.

What was supposed to be a dream getaway has turned into a nightmare for many visitors, prompting widespread outrage about the resort’s so-called 5-star rating.

“Worst Experience of My Life”

Disgruntled holidaymakers have taken to TripAdvisor to warn others about the catastrophic conditions.

Natsja, who stayed at the resort earlier this month, called it the “worst experience of my life.” She recounted: “I got poisoned, presumably by the water served at the bar, cantine, and restaurants. On the second day, I became so ill that I needed emergency treatment at 3 a.m., spending the night at the medical centre on drips and antibiotics. The food was so bad we skipped meals, and the lack of basic amenities like water and toilet paper made everything worse.”

Another guest, Gina B, vowed never to return to Cape Verde after her family was struck down by illness. “There were cockroaches in the rooms, cats roaming the outdoor restaurant areas, and food left out for hours with no cooling. We all caught a sickness bug, and it was horrible. I’ve never been ill on holiday before, but this trip was completely ruined.”

Mandy D described the experience as “the worst holiday ever,” citing filthy conditions and rude staff:“Hygiene was non-existent. Rooms, restaurants, cooking areas, plates, glasses—it was appalling. Many guests, myself included, fell ill with what I can only describe as food poisoning. This resort is an absolute disgrace.”

One guest summed it up bluntly: “How is this being advertised as a 5-star hotel?”

Holiday Claims Bureau Urges Action

Holiday Claims Bureau is now representing guests who fell ill at Melia Dunas Beach Resort and has highlighted a history of complaints against the resort. Michael Walker, a solicitor representing affected holidaymakers, expressed frustration at the recurring issues.

“This resort has a track record of guests falling ill, and the latest outbreak is yet another indication that proper health and safety standards are not being followed. People save for months, sometimes years to enjoy holidays like this, only to have their trips ruined by illness.”

Mr Walker is urging those affected to come forward: “If you’ve been affected, it’s crucial to seek advice. We want to ensure no other families endure this kind of distress.”

Despite mounting complaints, Melia Dunas Beach Resort has yet to issue a statement or acknowledge the crisis.
