“I couldn’t even move”: Guest describes couple’s sickness nightmare at Hotel RIU Cancun
A holiday couple has shared details of how their anniversary holiday at the 14-storey Hotel RIU Cancun in Mexico was spoiled when they both suffered with “horrible” gastric symptoms.
Writing on TripAdvisor as savvy traveller 24, the guest says that her boyfriend first started to feel unwell the morning after eating seafood from the buffet:
“He shortly began throwing up the next morning and had severe diarrhoea. After a few hours he had become so dehydrated and disoriented he saw doctor and was sent to hospital. He passed out in the elevator and could hardly walk and fainted again getting out of the taxi at the hospital.”

“$2,000 medical bill”
The reviewer says that the couple spent a whole day at the hospital before her partner was diagnosed with gastroenteritis and released. Tests had been carried out for bacteria, but they say that they were not told the results and faced a $2,000 medical bill. She goes on to claim that on returning to the hotel, another guest had been hospitalised with sickness after eating seafood.
Things went from bad to worse after the guests tried to make the most of their final night on the resort, with the reviewer saying that after an evening meal, she began to feel unwell and went to bed:
“I woke up around 10 with really bad stomach pains and sweating and severe diarrhoea that lasted over an hour. I eventually fell asleep and woke up an hour or 2 later with even worst pains and feeling like I was finally going to be sick. I started throwing up continuously I have never been so sick in my life!”
Flight nightmare
The ordeal continued through the guest’s flight home: “I managed a 10 hour flight but couldn’t eat as I was too scared of being sick. I looked like walking death on that flight and had the worst stomach pains and couldn’t even move or lay down.” She claims that she discovered that the food served was sometimes not kept fresh and that lunch dishes are re-served as dinner.
With an official 5-star rating, all-inclusive stays the Hotel RIU Cancun are available as part of TUI’s ‘Platinum’ range.
Other recent reviews criticise the standard of food provided at the hotel restaurant. Melanie leaves a 1-star review, claiming that the buffet food “sits out for days” and May visitor Danny questions the hotel’s 5-star rating:
“The pool itself was always cloudy and had a scum around the edges, it was also littered with half drunk beakers. The poolside restaurant was awful, fresh food constantly being piled on top of old food and large birds climbing all over the trays, leaving droppings everywhere!”
