Stricken visitors tell of “rampant” sickness at 5-star Iberostar Grand Bavaro
With its state-of-the art facilities, butler service and numerous speciality restaurants, The Iberostar Grand Bavaro is one of the leading hotels in the Dominican Republic. However, several visitors in the first quarter of 2019 claim that widespread gastric illness and poor food preparation has devastated stays at the adults-only complex.
Guest alleges “cracked pipe” led to contamination
One TripAdvisor contributor, under the username ‘iberostarmademesick’, alleges that a problem with the water supply led to scores of guests falling ill:
“During our stay at this Iberostar, there was a cracked water pipe under the resort. The crack caused contamination of the food and beverages. When the crack finally burst the pipe the resort shut off the water. That bacteria that has entered the pipe caused to my direct knowledge over 200 people to become sick.
In our direct group of 10, all but 1 got sick. It was non-stop stomach cramps, stomach pains, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever and dehydration…”
This account of distressing illness sweeping through travelling parties is not isolated. Another February guest says that food poisoning was “running through the entire complex”, including their own party. They say that the hotel played down the significance of their plight:
“…management provided us with a form to fill out, which was designed to shift blame away from the resort’s sanitary issues, and onto other possible explanations for your illness, like the plane trip, the heat, or food eaten on excursions. Management told us that our situation was isolated. We learned from fellow guests, however, that this was a rampant problem.” gcaug2006
Chicken dish was “not cooked”
Other guests posting reviews in the last few months have remarked upon issues they observed with food safety. Flipflopgirl55 says that “more than once we were served meat that was cooked well enough” and that she and her partner later became “miserably ill” with gastrointestinal symptoms. Mark D says he began eating a grilled chicken dish before discovering that the middle of the breast was not cooked and subsequently began to “violently vomit” and suffer diarrhoea.
Holiday Claims Bureau are alarmed to hear of these issues and urge stricken guests to seek legal advice where they have become ill as a result of adverse hygiene or sanitation. You should seek appropriate medical attention and report your illness to the Tour Representative; if you believe you have a genuine claim for compensation then you should not simply accept standardised responses from hotel staff that attempt to downplay or deflect your concerns.
Our holiday illness outbreak helpline for Iberostar Grand Bavaro guests is available to provide expert advice and guide you in seeking the compensation you deserve. Call our friendly team on 0161 813 2131 or use our online form to arrange a callback.
